Before changing the fastener or making hasty decisions, try to salvage your trousers using a simple trick from an expert seamstress in your home. Due to manufacturing errors, excessive use or inevitable damage, clothes can often have very noticeable and functional flaws that are difficult to ignore. Fortunately, for every sewing problem there is a creative trick that allows you to repair and salvage your garments in your home.
Sewing is an activity with multiple benefits. Although at first glance it seems like a talent that only a few possess, sewing at home can be learned step by step with patience.
Today I’m going to share my trick for preventing trouser fastenings from coming undone all the time. This trick works for zips in general, on dresses and blouses, but in the case of trousers, it becomes more urgent as no one likes to have their fly open in public.
Expert seamstress’s trick: what to do if your trouser zip keeps coming down
This trick has two variations or possibilities, but first I’ll explain why the zip comes down. The zip works poorly or does not stay closed when the upper part where it ends loses its ability to keep the zip closed and fixed.
In addition, when the zip is used a lot, it wears out and the teeth can start to become progressively damaged. In other cases, it is already like this due to a manufacturing fault.
If the zip works very poorly, you can take it to a dressmaker to have it replaced. On the other hand, if the fault does not bother you too much, you can fix it with a little sewing trick.
For this trick, you will need a pair of trousers with a zip that does not work very well, a key ring hook and a little wool. Simply place the key ring hook or a circle made of wool on the zip’s roller or slider. Once you have pulled the zip up, simply hook the wool or hook onto the button of the trousers.
Another option is to adjust the top of the zip with some tweezers so that the slider clicks into place and stays up. It’s that simple! With this inexpensive sewing trick, you can salvage your trousers and give your zips a new lease of life.
A trick and something else: what should I keep in mind when starting to sew from scratch?
- Whenever you are going to sew at home and mend clothes, take measurements and make patterns.
- Use threads and needles that are suitable for each fabric.
- Create a sewing notebook to write down every trick or expert tip that might come in handy at any time.
