Discover the foolproof method for washing lettuce and ensuring its freshness and food safety. Lettuce is one of the vegetables that is always present on Argentine tables, consumed at any time of the year. However, not everyone knows how to wash it properly to remove any bacteria that may be present between its leaves.

Washing this vegetable properly is a crucial step that can make a difference in your daily diet. Here’s how to do it using white vinegar.

How to wash lettuce to remove bacteria

  1. In a large bowl of water, add one tablespoon of white vinegar per litre.
  2. Immerse the lettuce leaves in this solution and let them sit for 10-15 minutes. This will help remove surface germs and residue.
  3. After soaking, rinse each leaf under cold running water to remove any vinegar residue and ensure freshness.
  4. Use a salad spinner or kitchen paper to dry the leaves, taking care not to tear them.

How to store lettuce so it doesn’t wilt quickly

Kitchen paper and a container with a lid: this is the ideal way to keep lettuce for longer, with crisp leaves and no strange smells. How do you do it?

First, you need to wash the lettuce thoroughly, leaf by leaf, to remove any soil and leave it spotless. Then, dry them well with a tea towel or salad spinner. This step is essential to ensure that the lettuce does not have excess water when stored.

Next, place one or two paper towels (napkins) at the bottom of a large container and place the leaves inside without pressing them down, ideally in a single layer or two, no more. Finally, add another layer of paper towels and close the Tupperware. Store it in the vegetable drawer of your refrigerator.
