When the washing machine has finished washing, is it better to leave the door open or close it? The answer is not obvious, and the consequences are not insignificant.

Appliances have been an invention that has greatly improved and revolutionised our lives. For all of us today, it would be unthinkable to live without a refrigerator, air conditioning and a dishwasher. Without a doubt, of all the appliances we have in our homes, the one that no one could do without is the washing machine.

Appliances must be used with care and undergo regular maintenance and servicing to preserve their useful life and ensure optimal use. Furthermore, we must not forget that appliances consume electricity. Therefore, using them properly also allows us to avoid wasting energy and thus keep our bills lower.

As already mentioned, refrigerators and other appliances must be used with care and knowledge. Sometimes, however, we do trivial things that, even if unconsciously, can cause a lot of damage to our appliances. In this article, we will examine precisely one bad habit that almost all of us have with our washing machines.

Is it better to leave the washing machine door open or closed when we go to hang up the laundry after washing? In general, most people close the door once they have emptied the drum of wet clothes. This is an automatic gesture made to avoid clutter and obstacles in the space. In reality, however, this gesture is a very serious mistake that could cost us dearly in the long run. In fact, even though the washing machine has finished washing, the drum is still damp. By closing the door, we are encouraging the growth of mould and bacteria inside the washing machine itself.

A washing machine with mould and mildew will not only give off an unpleasant smell that will also linger on our laundry, but it will also work less efficiently, consuming more water and electricity as a result. Wash after wash, we will end up with laundry that, instead of smelling fresh and clean, will smell bad, forcing us to repeat the wash cycle in the hope of solving this annoying problem.

It is also worth considering that a damp drum causes damage to both the seals and other rubber-coated components of the washing machine, a material that is highly affected by standing water deposits.

Is it better to leave the washing machine door open or closed after washing?

From what we have just explained, it is clear that closing the washing machine door immediately after washing is a very serious mistake. According to experts, once the wash cycle has finished, you should leave the washing machine open for several hours to allow the inside of the drum to dry thoroughly. Afterwards, instead of closing it tightly, it is always a good idea to keep the door ajar to prevent unpleasant odours from developing.
