Bay leaves are known for their unmistakable aroma and flavour in cooking. However, more and more people are leaving them in the cupboard for a reason: to repel insects naturally.

Placing bay leaves in the cupboard is a practice recommended by experts. Their intense aroma acts as a natural repellent, driving away moths, weevils, ants and cockroaches. Therefore, it is especially useful for protecting foods such as flour, legumes, rice and cereals.

In addition to repelling insects, bay leaves help absorb moisture from the environment, keeping food drier and the cupboard smelling fresh and pleasant.

How to use bay leaves in your cupboard

To take full advantage of their benefits, place a few dried bay leaves inside jars of rice, flour or legumes. You can also distribute several loose leaves on the shelves or store them in small cloth bags. Remember to change them every two or three months, or sooner if they lose their aroma.

Although effective, it is essential to keep your cupboard clean, check expiry dates and store food in tightly sealed jars.
